Tutorial 6 of 6

Journal, files, reports and the API

Intermediate 6 min

Keep a trade journal, save and reopen desks, share a link, export CSV and a printable report, hand tables to other apps and use the engine through the API or MCP.

This tutorial covers everything around the trading desks: reflection, storage, exports and automation. It works with any desk; the Fictional starter desk has data in every part.

1. Write a reflection

Open Journal. In New reflection enter an optional Symbol, the Date and your Reflection — why you took the paper trade, what happened and what you would do differently — then press Save reflection. Search the journal (or press /) filters the notes as you type. Reflections appear in the desk report.

2. Storage, recent desks and files

  • Your desk is saved in this browser automatically after each change; the top bar shows Saved in this browser. File → Recent desks… lists every desk stored here, with Open and Delete.
  • File → Save workspace file (Ctrl+S) writes a .ravingdesk.json file; Save as… asks for a new name. File → Open workspace file… (Ctrl+O) opens one again. Files from a newer version or other apps are refused with a clear message.
  • File → Share link… packs the whole desk into a link — nothing is uploaded. Anyone with the link can open a copy, so only share it with people who may see your fills and notes. Files and links are not encrypted.
  • File → Desk settings… changes the desk name, the Account currency label (RavingDesk does not convert currencies) and the Starting cash.

3. Exports and the report

The Export menu offers:

  • Fills (CSV), Orders (CSV), Positions (CSV), Price history (CSV) and Journal (CSV) for spreadsheets. Cells that start with =, + or @ are quoted so spreadsheets do not run them as formulas.
  • Desk report (Markdown) with account, positions and their sources, exposure, working orders, fills and journal.
  • Print or save as PDF… (Ctrl+P) — the print view includes the price chart; choose Save as PDF in the print dialog.
  • Price chart (SVG) and Price chart (PNG).

When other usefulweb apps can receive them, the menu also lists Open fills in another app…, Open positions in another app…, Open price history in another app… and Open the desk report in another app…. Tables handed to RavingDesk from another app open in the CSV import for review.

4. Keyboard

Press ? for Keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl+Z/Ctrl+Y undo and redo, Alt+1 … Alt+8 switch desks, N jumps to the main form of a desk and / searches the journal. The single-key shortcuts (?, N, /) never fire while you type and can be switched off in that dialog.

5. API and MCP

Help → API & MCP for this desk… shows the four engine tools and a ready request body built from your desk:

  • ravingdesk-paper-portfolio — positions, P&L, exposure and a price shock from fills and marks
  • ravingdesk-position-size — the risk planner
  • ravingdesk-crypto-round-trip — the spot round-trip planner
  • ravingdesk-eth-gas — the EIP-1559 gas estimator

Send the body with POST /api/v1/tools/ravingdesk-paper-portfolio/calculate, or connect an AI agent to the app's /mcp endpoint. The tools compute the same numbers as the desk in your browser. They are paper calculations only and never place an order.
