Tutorial 4 of 6
Marks, sources and your own price chart
Intermediate 7 min
Keep watchlist marks with a source and date, chart your own price observations, import a CSV price export and save an ECB euro reference rate as a mark.
RavingDesk has no live market feed. Every price is one you enter — with the name of its source and the date you saw it — so you can always tell where a number came from. This tutorial uses the Fictional starter desk.
1. Save a mark
Open Watchlist & chart. In Watchlist marks enter Symbol EXAMPLE-A, Mark price 55.1, Source name (for example broker statement) and an As-of date, then press Save mark. Saving a symbol again replaces its mark. The table shows Source and As of next to each mark; Edit puts a mark back into the form and Remove deletes it.
Marks value your open positions. Check the source and date before relying on them.
2. Read the price chart
Manual price chart draws your own dated observations for the Chart symbol you pick. The starter desk has 26 fictional observations of EXAMPLE-A; the line above the chart reads 26 observations · change +4.4 %. Dates are spaced by elapsed time and the vertical scale fits the observed range.
The chart has a text alternative with the first and last date, low, high and last price, and the table below lists every observation with its source (50 per page).
- Use latest as mark copies the newest observation, with its source and date, into the watchlist.
- Add to chart in a watchlist row adds that mark as an observation.
- Download chart (SVG) and Download chart (PNG) save the chart.
To add one observation, fill Add an observation (Symbol, Observed price, Observation date, Source name) and press Save observation. There is one observation per symbol and day; saving the same day again replaces it.
3. Import a price export
Many websites let you download daily prices as CSV. Choose File → Import CSV (fills or prices)…, then Open CSV file… or paste the text. A file with a date and a price column (for example date, close) is recognised as price observations. If it has no symbol or source column, enter Symbol for all rows and Source of the prices. The preview says how many observations are ready and lists skipped rows with the reason, such as The date is missing or invalid. Press Import.
Only import prices from sources whose terms allow you to use them.
4. ECB euro reference rates
Open FX rates and press Load ECB reference rates. RavingDesk asks the currency converter of usefulweb.site for the latest euro foreign exchange reference rates of the European Central Bank. The desk shows the Rate date, the Cache status (Current publication or a cached copy when the ECB could not be reached) and a table with Units per 1 EUR (ECB) and EUR per unit (calculated).
Save as mark stores, for example, EURUSD with the source ECB euro reference rate and the publication date. Reference rates are published once per working day for information; they are not prices you can trade at. The ECB permits reuse when it is cited as the source — the desk and the report do that for you.
